The e -chelalan system has been formally launched in Karachi, which has marketing a major change in the city’s traffic management. After its implementation, all the traffic police checkpoints have been removed, and challan machines were withdrawn from the traffic parts.
Under the new system, traffic police officials will no longer stop the vehicles to issue fines. Instead, violations will be monitored by CCTV cameras installed across the city. Challan will be released on the basis of photography or video evidence, which will be sent directly to the owners of the vehicle.
Officials said the new digital system aims to ensure transparency, justice and performance in traffic law enforcement agencies. Traffic officers will now focus on maintaining the smooth flow of the vehicle. They will only be allowed to remove the cars that are blocking traffic, while the exercise of lifting motorcycles has been stopped.
The decision was taken under the direction of Inspector General Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon. DIG Traffic has issued orders to enforce the system across the city, calling it a step towards modernizing Karachi’s traffic monitoring and implementation.
