Faizabad Interchange Redesign to Ease Islamabad Traffic
Capital Development Authority (CDA) has declared its plans to have a redesigning of the Faizabad Interchange, as opposed to their previous plan of merely expanding the loops. Instead, the authority will carry out a complete overhaul and expansion of the decades-old structure to provide a long-term solution to chronic traffic congestion.
The conclusion of the decision saw a high level meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa. Firstly, the bidding of a Rs. 200 million project to expand the loops of the Faizabad interchange one of the main entrances of Islamabad and a security center where demonstrators gather publicly was called. However, after reviewing the proposals, CDA decided against issuing a work order, stating that the loop widening would only serve as a temporary relief.
“We want a long-term solution for the next three decades,” CDA Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza said. He confirmed that three consultant firms have been engaged to prepare a comprehensive master plan for the Faizabad Interchange redesign, which will be presented to the interior minister for approval.
Once approved, the construction will be carried out in multiple phases, ensuring that the redesign meets both future traffic demands and budgetary constraints. The initiative follows directives from Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who has urged authorities to address daily traffic bottlenecks, particularly on the loop connecting Murree Road with the Islamabad Expressway.
With the new Faizabad Interchange redesign plan, the CDA aims to not only ease traffic flow but also future-proof one of the capital’s busiest transport hubs for the next several decades.
