Telecom companies are in their final stages of integration between Telenor and Ufone, officials said, adding that the merger is expected to be completed within one to two weeks.

Officials of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) informed the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom that the matter has been reviewed for 18 months.

CCP Chairman Kabir Sudhu shared this information during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology on Friday.

“PTCL is a strategic company for Pakistan,” Sadhu said while writing a letter to the committee about the integration.

Authorities acknowledged that the merger could not be finalized in just four to five months, as the PTCL needed some documents, which were later provided. However, Senator Kamran Murtaza questioned that CCP reviews, which took 18 months, could be completed in just one or two weeks.

It is expected that this will be concluded after submitting the necessary documents after the merger of Telenor and Ufone, but concerns are about to be finalized in the matter for a year and a half.

Senator Affanullah inquired whether the government could complete the 5G spectrum auction by December, as his minister said.

The PTA chairman confirmed the preparations for the 5G auction but said that some pending legal cases could delay the process. Senator Affanullah proposed to use the Attorney General’s office to accelerate these issues.

The PTA confirmed that there are no orders for the 2600 MW spectrum, but legal matters can still affect the auction.
