Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has announced that the Karimabad underpass will end in the next two and a half months.
Addressing a news channel, Wahab said that the NOC was released in 2017 for the Green Line project, but the federal agency is only resuming work in 2025. “After eight years, he is still claiming that he is fine and the mayor is wrong.”
He criticized the condition of Ma Jinnah Road and said that due to the Green Line project, road street lights and sewerage systems have been classified. Wahab added, “They have not yet built the Green Line Tower and are instead focusing on the clothing market.”
The Mayor said his office received a letter on July 7, 2025, to resume the Green Line. He responded on July 9, asking federal authorities to complete the old, incomplete task first and to start the project and clear the timeline to eliminate it. “To date, we have not received any response. Does a federal agency have the right to ignore the local government?” He asks.
Wahab added that when the roads are in bad shape, the citizens blame the mayor instead of the prime minister. He said, “The federal government should be ashamed that the NOC has been trapped for nine years. He says there is no soup to provide funds to the mayor, but in Mustafa Kamal’s time, the federal government supported the local government.”
On the Red Line Project, Wahab noted that the actual rate of the deal has increased, and the city is working to solve technical issues. He warned, “If we do not make any decision soon, the costs will increase even more.”
The mayor confirmed that work on the Karimabad underpass is moving rapidly and will be done in about two months. He added that Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is also repairing 106 roads, which will be completed in the same timeframe. He assured that the contractors failed to meet the standard.
