The Ministry of Industry and Production, for the first time, has implemented the quality and safety standards for all vehicles in Pakistan, including imports and locally manufactured units, which aims to improve road safety and environmental compliance.

According to reports released by the Engineering Development Board (EDB), all new and used imported vehicles will now have to comply with dozens of WP-29 standards. A framework designed for car harmony through the United Nations World Forum.

These include ultraviolet, side, or Poland’s effects in the case of vomiting system, airbags, seat belts, lighting, and crash protections. Rules also order standards for children prevention, tone prevention, tire safety, steering system, vehicle streeting, noise and path emissions.

For electric and hydrogen vehicle, the rules have been extended to battery safety, charging system, and high voltage protection.

On the recommendation of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), the decision has been confirmed by the federal cabinet, and importers have also demanded that they receive pre -shipment inspection certificates from the agencies approved in KTL in JAAA or KTL in Japan. Shipment will be conducted in Pakistan’s designated centers. The same standard will apply to a local deposit vehicle. Automackers have to comply by June 30, 2026, after which the EDB will be given the option to revoke the licenses of non -compliance companies.

Industry representatives, however, have expressed concerns. Papam’s Aamir Allawala questioned whether the EDB has the technical ability to manage such a widespread quality, and warns that the dependence on foreign labs for certification can increase and eliminate foreign exchange.
