Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah announced that his government would prepare a Karachi Transport Master Plan in partnership with the World Bank, to tackle the city’s long -term movement. The project will integrate the bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, Metro Light Rail, and Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) into the integrated framework.
High -level meeting
The announcement was made during a meeting at a CM House on Friday with a World Bank delegation led by Ibrahim Khalil Zaki, a transport manager in the Middle East, North Africa, and Pakistan. The delegation included Lead Transport Economists Georges, Benjo, and senior experts Frederico Ferreira, Papa Moodo, and Megali, while Sindh Ministers and senior provincial officials.
CM’s remarks and promises
Shah described the World Bank as an important development partner and emphasized the urgent need for modern transport system in Karachi. He said the city needs at least 15,000 buses to meet daily demand, he added, adding that BRT corridors should be met with metro light rail and a living circular railway. He also pointed to the introduction of Sindh’s electric buses as a step towards climate -friendly citizen movement.
World Bank Support
Zaki assured full technical and financial support from the World Bank, noting that the project would cover BRT lines, metro rail, tourist and goods trains and KCRs. He also emphasized the need for the establishment of a transport industry in Karachi to meet both the local and national demand.
Industry and working groups
The Chief Minister presented Dhabi as a dedicated center for development transport industries and promised full cooperation for investors. The two sides agreed to finalize the terms of the reference to draft the master plan and to form a joint working group of representatives of the Sindh government and the World Bank to appoint experts.
Yellow line BRT advance
The meeting also reviewed the progress on the yellow line BRT, which extends up to 21 km from Dawood Chorangi to Khalid Bin Walid Road. The project includes 21 at -grade stations, four underpasses, four high stations, eight flyover, and three underground stations. Once completed in December 2025, 300,000 passengers are expected to be served daily.
Minister for Transport Sharjeel Anim Memon has reported that construction on several sites is moving forward, ending 10 % with Depot 1 and Depot 2 17 %, ending on September 2026.
