In Karachi, dairy farmers have demanded an immediate increase in milk prices per liter per liter, warning of severe financial losses and livestock risk after the recent floods.
Addressing the Karachi Press Club, the leaders of the Dairy Farmers Association said that the floods have caused a huge blow to the dairy sector. He said that the cost of almost all inputs used in milk production has increased by about 30 %, making it difficult for the farmers to maintain operation.
The association has claimed that milk farmers are currently facing a loss of Rs 3 billion daily due to milk supply works. He said that Karachi has more than one million cattle and buffaloes, which produces five million liters of milk every day for the city.
Currently, after selling milk for Rs 220 per liter, farmers argued that the proposed increase at Rs 270 per liter is necessary to maintain the sector. He warned that if the corrective measures were not taken, many animals could face the lead due to the increasing costs of fodder and other essential goods.
The farmers also set a deadline, stating that if the Sindh government did not issue any information for approval of the price hike by October 1, they would protest outside the Chief Minister’s house.
