Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Federal Minister for Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain, at a high -level meeting at CM House, agreed to establish a national food security policy with provincial consultation and to ensure the urgent need for urgent support to encourage high production for wheat growers.
Welcoming the Federal Minister and his delegation, the Chief Minister reminded that PPP Chairman Bilal Bhutto Zardari had already warned about eliminating the challenges of food security. “We should give our farmers a good help. Without it, they will not grow wheat,” he said.
Federal Minister Rana Tanveer acknowledged the CM’s concerns, adding, “Last year, wheat saving in the country has decreased by 6 percent. The Prime Minister has directed me to meet you, as the federal government is committed to building strategic reserves of wheat.
Murad Shah told the meeting that Sindh manufactured 3.452 million metric tonnes of wheat in 2024-25, with the current stock is 1.385 million metric tonnes. He said that there have been several meetings of the heroes regarding the wheat needs and reserves of Sindh and Balochistan in the province, and existing estimates show enough stocks to the new crop.
The Chief Minister warned that the absence of support price last year has caused a major setback to the farmers. “Farmers suffered so much loss that some people were forced to sell their land or go to other crops,” he said. As a result, wheat was also acre, production decreased, and farmers could not afford fertilizer and other inputs. “
Tariq Bajwa pointed out that 90 % of Pakistan’s wheat production comes from Sindh and Punjab, where 80 % of it is eaten. He emphasized that the only way to strengthen food safety is the privileges of the farmers.
Participants agreed that wheat should not be imported, and instead, domestic farmers should be encouraged and protected. He said that wheat prices in the open market are currently RS. 3,300 and RS. 4,000 per 40kg, and auxiliary policies should take advantage of farmers directly rather than the middle.
The meeting has decided to draft a comprehensive national wheat policy with the provincial input, focusing on the help of farmers, better purchasing procedures, and ensuring strategic reserves.
CM Murad Shahsha concluded, “This year, we have to fix the price of a support so that our farmers are safe. Only then can we save food for our people.”
The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah, Special Assistant to Food Jabir Khan, CM Principal Secretary for Principal Secretary, Secretary of Agriculture Zaman Narijo, and Secretary of Food Bachal Rahpoto.
