Schools and Colleges Closed in Azad Kashmir August 15-16
MUZAFFARABAD – The regional government has announced that all schools and colleges closed in Azad Kashmir for two days, following a spell of relentless heavy rains, landslides, and a destructive cloudburst in several areas. The closure, scheduled for August 15 and 16, applies to both public and private educational institutions across the region.
According to the AJK Education Department, the move is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff, as the risk of landslides and flooding remains high due to continuous downpours.
The situation escalated yesterday when a powerful cloudburst struck the Naseerabad area of Muzaffarabad, triggering flash floods that tragically claimed the lives of six members of the same family. In Bagh, the sudden downpours resulted in flooding of rivers and streams, whereas in Bhimber Nullah, Samahni, the flooding was on the high level that caused flooding in a number of areas.
Gilgit-Baltistan has also been grappling with similar weather conditions, where heavy rains have triggered landslides and flash floods, resulting in 10 fatalities so far.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned that more rain is expected in the next 24 to 48 hours, urging residents and authorities to remain on high alert. For now, with schools and colleges closed in Azad Kashmir, officials hope to minimize movement in vulnerable areas until the weather stabilizes.
