Punjab Enforces 10% Free Education Quota in Private Schools
The Punjab Education Department has announced a new directive requiring all private schools in the province to reserve 10 percent of their seats for free education. The policy is aimed at supporting children from low-income families, those facing economic hardship, and children with special needs.
To put the plan into action, the department is bringing back the Private Schools Ordinance 2014 and has instructed district education officers to ensure full compliance. Schools have been told to share updated admission records so that a list of eligible students can be compiled.
The Ministry of Education has started collecting data for this purpose, with the survey expected to be completed by August 31 after the summer break ends.
Speaking on the matter, Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat said that any private school failing to meet the quota would face strict action. He also revealed that Punjab is setting up its first autism schools—institutions dedicated to providing tailored learning environments for children with special needs.
According to the minister, this initiative is a step toward building an inclusive education system where every child, regardless of background or ability, has access to quality learning opportunities.
