Foreign Universities Want to Establish Campuses in Pakistan
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif recently convened a pivotal meeting aimed at transforming and uplifting the higher education landscape across the province. During the meeting, the Higher Education Department presented an in-depth briefing highlighting key initiatives. Among the decisions, three prominent institutions—Government College University, Government College for Women University, and the University of Engineering and Technology—were selected to be developed as model campuses. A notable development discussed was the interest shown by internationally renowned universities from the UK, South Korea, and Kazakhstan in establishing campuses in Punjab. Institutions such as the University of London, Brunel University, the University of Gloucestershire, and the University of Leicester are keen to expand their presence, a move warmly endorsed by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Introduction of KPI-Based Evaluations: Universities will implement Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to rigorously assess faculty effectiveness and monitor Vice Chancellors’ performance, ensuring accountability and quality education delivery.

Focus on Underperforming Institutions: A comprehensive report on underachieving colleges will be compiled to target improvements, ensuring no institution lags behind in maintaining educational standards.

Creation of an Education Vigilance Squad: A dedicated team will conduct surprise inspections to supervise student attendance, maintain campus cleanliness, evaluate teaching quality, and uphold discipline across educational institutions.

Scholarships and Digital Learning Support: The ongoing CM Punjab Talented Scholarship and Laptop Scheme, which has attracted over 19,000 applicants nationwide, will be further strengthened to enhance accessibility and impact.

Strategic Plan for 2025-2029: Discussions included a forward-looking Higher Education Strategic Plan focusing on innovative teaching methods, cutting-edge research, the adoption of digital learning tools, and fostering creative knowledge exchange in universities.

Autonomy and Governance Reforms: The meeting endorsed measures to grant greater institutional autonomy and governance improvements to public sector universities, aiming for efficient administration and academic freedom.

Punjab’s First Higher Education Conference: Preliminary approval was given to host a provincial conference to address prevailing challenges and promote collaborative problem-solving among educational stakeholders.
Additionally, a separate evaluation has been commissioned to review the status of commerce colleges, identifying inactive institutions and devising strategies for their revival and better performance.
